âThis is Jackieâs house.â
Laney squinted to see the small bungalow in the darkness. They were southwest of the city, on the outskirts, and there wasnât much in terms of streetlights. The sun was almost hiding, allowing for a peek of light to filter through the trees lining the small street. Cars were parked on both sides and she held her breath half expecting Cobyâs Jeep to take out a rearview mirror or two as he navigated the small street.
Call him adept because he managed to skillfully slip through unscathed. She was used to driving an SUV, but she wasnât so confident she could have pulled off the maneuver. She added excellent driver to the growing list of his positive attributes.
âSomeone could be keeping an eye on the place,â she warned.
âYep.â He found a spot and parked. Again, she was impressed with his driving abilities. âStay right there and Iâll come get you.â
He was out of the driverâs side before she could question him. She quickly realized he was planning to sell this as a date when he came around to her side and opened the door for her. In all seriousness, Coby was exactly the kind of person she could see herself with beyond a couple of dates. She could envision snuggling up on a Friday night to watch a crackling fire outdoors and under the canopy of a night sky. She could see herself waking up with him next to her and then staying in bed on a Saturday morning long past what would be considered a reasonable time to crawl out of bed. Coffee. Breakfast. Sex. Not necessarily in that order. Preferably not in that order.
Heâd gone to her left side and she quickly realized he was doing what he could to shield the fact she was carrying. Smart guy, not that sheâd underestimated him. All she could think right then was that he would make one helluva deputy.
Okay, that wasnât all she could think, but it was the safest place to let her mind go to. She leaned in as close as she could to his strong frame, careful to cover her gun with her arm.
The lights were out as they approached the small chain-link fence surrounding the front yard. There was
